This is a new documentary about the Oregon State Hospital (made famous by One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest). It documents the struggles of 5 people in the hospital. It also touches on the history of mental hospitals and the legal struggles these patients face. http://www.guiltyexcept.com/index.php It was shown in Portland at the end of June and there is no word on when the full version will be available for the public, but there is contact information for the people involved in the documentary. Here is little excerpt from the website: "Guilty Except for Insanity follows the journeys of five people who enlist the insanity defense after being charged with serious crimes. The documentary portrays the circumstances surrounding their crimes and the dilemmas they confront as they enter the Oregon State Hospital under the "guilty except for insanity" plea." -posted by Trevor Tusow

This post comes to you from the Pacific Northwest! I (Rob) got to work with some FABULOUS teachers at the AP Psych Institute in Bellevue, WA, and we worked with an interesting website this morning: Poll Everywhere http://www.polleverywhere.com/ This site allows you to post a multiple choice question for folks (students and/or teachers in a prof. development course, etc.) who can then text in a certain code and "vote" on one of the options. At our institute we used poll everywhere as part of a discussion about "Formative Diagnostic Items" - a formative assessment technique that helps teachers quickly gather data about student misconceptions. (By the way: My participants are the BEST participants ever in the history of AP Psychology institutes. So there) - posted by Rob McEntarffer

Is there anything worse than being pushed too hard by a salesperson? Before Mother’s Day my daughters and I went shopping in a tea store in a nearby mall. Stress has become a problem of pandemic proportions. I keep hearing people tell me how "stressed out” they are. It’s time to eradicate this disease of the mind. I came across a transcript by a journalist who interviewed me for a national newspaper a while back. I thought you might benefit from some of these ideas and tips as well. Tips on Avoiding and Preventing Stress 1. In your opinion, is stress an unavoidable consequence of life? DARREN HARDY: Stress is a part of life. Life requires stress. As a muscle needs resistance to grow stronger, so do we. Many times, stress awakens our greater potential and makes us rise to the performance we were capable of all along, but we needed the challenge. 2. Why do some people seem to stress out more than others? Do some people just naturally tolerate stressors more easily than others? DH: Ultimately, stress is a mental illusion, an interpretation and a perception. What is stressful to one person is blissful to another. Heights might be stressful for one person, while free-falling out of an airplane is sheer bliss for another. Public speaking might completely debilitate one person but be the most empowering activity for another. Losing $100,000 in the stock market might be less stressful for one person than having a bad hair day is for another. Stress is a mental perception, chosen by the perceiver. 3. Please give some of your favorite tips for managing existing stress (assuming the stressors can’t be prevented). CLICK HERE TO READ MORE.

How do people move away from their extremist beliefs? When an individual leaves a terrorist organisation do they change their attitudes and beliefs or do they just stop acting on them? How often do individuals leave one extremist organisation and replace those beliefs with other extreme beliefs? Do they hold similar values and just moderate them a bit? If governments around the world address disenfranchisement and bring the extremists "into the tent" does that deradicalise them? What a fantastically interesting area to pursue for a Phd. My lovely friend Kate has the untold luxury and burden of trying to answer these questions for the next two years. She is already one year in and these days we only have a strict three year time frame for each Phd. She has the privilege of interviewing the fair dinkum extremists who have walked away. Medical Questions and Quantum Physics

Lately I have been receiving a lot of inquiries concerning the field of medicine and its relationship with quantum physics. Of course since quantum physics is the basis for all physical processes including those that happen in the body, it would seem that its findings should somehow be made relevant to discovering cures for diseases or perhaps for enhancing the mind-body interaction. One of the chief elements of a possible connection between quantum physics and the body would seem to be found in the observer effect of quantum physics wherein by performing acts of observations one actually affects or disrupts the state of the object being observed. Unfortunately to date no one knows how the observer effect actually works. We do know it takes place but it is hard to find a model that uses math to predict how it works and therefore to control it so that we achieve desired goals or outcomes. What is certain is that in quantum physics all actions in the universe are governed by quantum wave functions that I call qwiffs for short. Qwiffs govern the probabilities of events taking place. When actions occur that follow a pattern of intelligent behavior these qwiffs change abruptly from indicating probable or possible actions to a meaningful single actual action. Whenever atoms are arranged in a highly repetitive pattern, such as those found in crystals or in the long strands of molecular DNA, the qwiffs also take on a similar pattern. This pattern constitutes a continual kind of observation in which the qwiff, in a sense, is observing itself over and over again. Quantum waves and qwiffs can be imagined as constrained by such a pattern, which, in fact, gives the structure its stability. The qwiff, in my view, turns on and off through the observer effect. When an observations occurs, the qwiff “pops,” and a pointlike atom, or part of an atom, is manifested for an instant. When no observation takes place, the qwiff “hangs around,” like a ghost, in the...

I just crossed a very important threshold in my life and spent the most glorious 40th birthday celebration weekend with my most cherished friends and family. And though there was a wide range of ages and generations represented, many of them told me similar things about being 40 and how “life happens” in one’s 40s. What does this mean? Does this mean that I haven’t really been living? Does it mean that my 20s and 30s were just dress rehearsals for my grand 40s? Well, I asked these very questions, and though the responses were varied, they were all very interesting. My mentor Jim Rohn emphasized that one of the first things everyone should work on is their physical health. He said, "How terrible would it be if the mind said, ‘let’s go conquerthe world’ and the body said, ‘I can’t even get out of bed’?” It takesyour healthy body to carry around your head full of ideas and yourheart’s desires. There is nothing more pitiful than a ready and willing mind but an incapable body. There is a well-known quote from the philosopher Virgil that says,"The greatest wealth is health.” I also believe that health is thebeginning of wealth. In other words, your health will help you createwealth. Times of great danger. The great efficiencies oftechnology have made us more inactive and sedentary than ever before.Food has become more abundant, more easily accessible, super-sized,bulk packaged and mass merchandised. Commercial marketing hasproliferated into every space of attention with ingeniously creativeand utterly tantalizing commercial marketing. It has never been moredifficult to become and remain healthy. If you are in the business of attracting, influencing, selling orleading others, how you show up, your physical appearance, speaks volumes about who you are, how you are and what you are or not capable of. I know, people shouldn’t judge you, right? Well, here is a clue… they do! Whether you like it or not, people make judgments and draw conclusions about you in the first 10-15 seconds they meet you, based solely on how you look. Like it or not, how you show up on the outside says a lot about you on the inside. Our body advertises our personal development. All the habits, behaviors, choices, disciplines (or lack there of) are made physical (literally) in your physique. Here is a good question to consider: CLICK HERE TO READ REST OF POST
