One, thatI asked… and two, that she gave it me! I said simply, "it never hurtsto ask.” This is true in most instances, most every day. I’m a big believer that you only get what you ask for. If you don’t ask, you don’t get. So why not ask for everything? The worst possible thing that can happen is they say no.

My coworker, Colin Bower, has a problem that I'm fairly sure you've never faced. Last year his children were abducted by his ex-wife and taken to Egypt against his will. It's been over a year that Colin has been working on getting his kids back. And how will he do it? Using a network.
So far, every bit of success we've had in moving the story forward has come through our networks, which were built via years and years of relationship building and development. We had access to the Vice President of the United States, several media people inside big networks like NBC, CNN and USA Today, and several other business and industry leaders, all via our work on social networks.
If that's too obtuse, how about the world of job searching?...

I recently attended a meeting and only half the people who were there were really there. What’s worse is that it was an important strategy planning meeting.
Then I thought about my wife, Susan. I had recently had a discussion with her about the same thing… except that she was sharing about how much it means to her when I am “present” with her. I have come to learn that it’s important to her for me to focus on her. I have also come to understand what it means when I am not really there.
The connection between the two meetings could not have been clearer to me. The problem is that we aren’t there when we are there. In February, 2009, I asked people on Twitter where the cool kids were staying in New York City these days (rumor has it that there are more than one hotel there). The first person to answer me was Chris Kieff. The second to answer me was Brett Petersel from Mashable. The third person to answer me was the Roger Smith Hotel, who said I should drop by—they have a blogger's special.
And so began one of my favorite case studies in the use of listening tools in social media, and part of the reason I shared the importance of growing bigger ears with you. Let me explain what happened.
Listening for Business

Now I don’t like this fact. I would philosophically argue against this fact. But it is a fact… and the evidence is all around us.
Who makes the best-tasting hamburger in the world? Doubtful you’d anoint McDonald’s with that title, but they outsell everyone else by many billions of dollars.
What is the best wine in the world? Certainly Franzia (which comes in a box!) wouldn’t be your first or 100th guess, but it is the best selling.
What is the highest-quality bottled water? If you tested it,
it certainly wouldn’t be Aquafina (owned by PepsiCo), Dasani (owned by
Coca-Cola) or Poland Spring (owned by Nestle Waters), but those are the
number 1, 2 and 3 best selling.
Nine times out of 10 it is not the best or highest-quality clothing
line, automobile, restaurant, CPA firm, real estate agent, lawyer,
furniture manufacturer, refrigerator, etc. that sells the most or
becomes the biggest—it is the ones who market themselves the best.
This is the business axiom that I witness all around me every day:
The ultimate success of a product or service is 10% the quality of the product and 90% the quality of the marketing.
Now while I don’t necessarily LIKE that fact, as I believe the
success of a product or service should be what’s most important and it
should stand ENTIRELY on the value it delivers, that is just not how it
works in reality.
Even if you are simply an individual in a sales organization this is
true. It is not necessarily the best, the highest quality, highest
class, most refined people that make it to the top… it is the ones who
market themselves, network themselves, position themselves with
credibility amongst their peers and demonstrate their growing and
developing selves to the circle around them that end up at the top of
the sales organization.
Now, let me also add this: If your product or service is bad… or even if you are bad, unethical or without integrity, no amount of marketing will make you or your product or service...

I’m a serious student of time management. I was hooked the first time I attended a Franklin-Covey seminar—I was 23. Using a system that included life planning (not just a calendar), I was able to get more done without feeling so scattered.
But since then, “more” has turned into a lot more. And it’s not just my stuff that that I have to keep track of… it’s my kids, my husband, work, school, writing deadlines, travel schedules, etc. Keeping everything organized in one online calendar helps, but the warning light on my mental-stress indicator was flashing OVERLOAD on a regular basis.
So it’s no wonder that the title of Patrick Lencioni’s book The 3 Big Questions for a Frantic Family caught my attention. Frantic is exactly how I felt. Maybe Lencioni and his book could offer some guidance...

The most powerful tool in social media is listening. I say this because at the same time you're thinking about how to engage in all this new stuff, people out there are pushing commentary all over the place about what they like and don't like about your product, your competitor's product, their needs. They're screaming out with opportunities for you to solve, and all you have to do is listen, process what you've heard, and engage with them in a reasonable way. It's the closest thing to printing money that I can tell you about.
